HISTORY |
Since 1988 one of the highlights for GLBT fans attending the San Diego Comic Con has been the Gays In Comics. Andy Mangels, founder, has organized and moderated the event from the beginning. Fans come to hear creators of differing orientations talk about GLBT issues and offer their opinions.
It was after attending the panel in 1997 that GLA member UluVakk (that's Color Kid from the Legion of Substitute Heroes in case you're wondering about the reference) became inspired with the idea of bringing together other GLBT fans. It was a perfect solution to the few other fans who were posting campy and openly gay remarks on the old AOL DC message boards. What began as very small and informal email list has become this website and a much larger email list. If you want to know a little more, you can read the story of the GLA's origins and some of the first message board posts in the Queen Team fanfic area.
The GLA is happy to be able to give people who couldn't attend the convention at least a little sense of the event by giving you highlights from the 2000 "Gays In Comics" booklet as well as the choice to download the entire piece in an Adobe Acrobat PDF file.
There is also now a complete listing of contributors to the 25 issue run of Gay Comics. The listing appears with the permission of series editor Andy Mangels.
If you don't have Adobe Acrobat or have an older version, you may download a copy of it for free by clicking on the Acrobat icon, and following the instructions on the site. For those of you who want to download the GIC file now, please click on the link below to start the download. Time to download the file (approximately 900 KB) will vary depending on connection speed.
There are back issues of Gay Comix and Gay Comics still available from the supplier (not the GLA).
The price for each issue (except #25) is: $4 post paid each (US); $4.50 (Canada); $6 (Overseas).
The cost of #25 is: $7.50 (US); $8 (Canada); $9.50 (Overseas).
