ORIGIN

I guess you can say the Gay League started in the summer of '97, as just a few America Online members posting on the official DC AOL Comics message boards (which has now become a full fledged internet website). There was already a very large established community of AOL comic fans called the AOLeague. But a few of us didn't quite fit in with that crowd. We wanted to be able to debate on things like - "Who's was hunkier in the pre-boot Legion..... Mon-El or Timber Wolf?" - without getting a (pun intended) "queer" look from the other comic fans. We also wanted to be able to discuss anything gay-related without having the numerous straight posters continually barrage any such threads with Bible quotes, personal rhetoric, and hate-filled speeches that homosexuality was a "sin" and "morally wrong", etc., etc.

We eventually began to search each other out, and in time recognized our fellow posters who were "family." A few of us had already known each other through several fan fic threads which involved a series of stories featuring a thrown-together group called The Queen Team. For legal reasons, those threads had to be taken down by the DC Online staff - and us gay AOL users no longer had a venue to, well....... be gay comic fans.

Until one day, a new super group was formed! A rag-tag team of former "Queen Teamers" and other gay posters formed a group that would one day rival the infamous AOLeague......

That's right....... we became.......... The GayOLeague!!!!!

Ok, pretty silly name, I know....... but it sustained us rather well for quite some time. Once in a blue moon we still call ourselves the "GayOLeague" sometimes out of habit. We decided to simplify the name when we had to choose a domain name for this site. Instead of using GayOLeague or Gay League of America in the URL, we went with using just "Gay League." Why? While the landslide majority of the members do live in the U.S., there are certain members in Canada, Europe, Australia, Asia, and other places. This being the internet, hopefully more people from around the world come across us in our new home.

So far we've had a blast as a group - starting as just a small bunch of people that regularly e-mailed each other and growing to a rather large presence on the 'net. There have even been regular meetings of groups of GLA members in places like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and other places - including the major comic conventions. But we realized there's an enormous amount of gay readers out there who haven't been able to experience the same kind of "community" that we have - so that's why we created this website. Hopefully more gay comic readers can "find each other" through this site the way we did. Finally, a place to feel at home - and discover other gay comic fans who share the same interests as you do.

The Gay League has grown by leaps and bounds since it's inception. Around 1,400 members belong to the Gay League Chat List, and GLAFiles, a related list, was started with a focus on sharing art, photo manipulations and other files. We've been featured in many gay or internet-related magazines, and even mentioned in some comic books! Look for us at the annual San Diego Comic Con. There's no stopping us now.....

The best thing about the Gay League are the numerous strong friendships that have been made, and the positive changes it's made in many Gay League member's lives. Take full advantage of our profile pages to meet Gay League members in your area.

If you're new here, and you'd like to make your own Profile page, please do so by sending in your info by using the handy Join the GLA link. We're hoping every gay comic fan that has access to the internet will eventually add to our growing "community."

Hope you enjoy your time here!
