Review by Fred Towers

Perry Moore
Hyperion Books

At the same time that he’s coming to terms with his sexual orientation, basketball star Thom Creed is trying to figure out exactly what his untrained superpowers can do. In an attempt to break away from his seemingly non-understanding father (an ex-hero with something to hide) and homophobic community, Thom runs away, only to find himself in the middle of a multi-hero rescue operation. Using his ability to heal, he keeps an injured woman alive until the League superheroes arrive and impresses them enough to get an invitation to try out for a hero apprentice position. Thom is teamed with an old woman who can see into the future, a spiteful girl who unleashes her power through fire, a sickly boy who is able to inflict disease on anyone, and a demoted hero with insane speed. With superheroes dying in mysterious circumstances, Thom is forced to admit publicly that he is gay in order to prevent a miscarriage of justice, but finds himself cast out of the League. He organizes his ragtag team to figure out what is really going on and to fight society’s prejudices as well as the criminal element of the town.

Some reviews I’ve read have said that this book starts slow, but I found that not to be true. This novel packs in teen angst about fitting in, coming out as gay, coming out as a superhero and more. This novel packs in a great deal of story into 428 pages. Thom has to come to terms with his newfound realization of his sexual orientation as well as the fact that he has superpowers, which is made worse by the fact that his dad is a fallen superhero who is against super-powered people and gays, too. What a conflict for a young male teen? His mother abandoned him, so he has no one to turn to about these feelings he’s having. Except for maybe a villain in disguise. Or is he the villain? I won’t give it away. Read it to find out.

There’s also a lot of superhero action on top of that. The reader will find great, quirky characters to adore, be aggravated by, and befriend. Great action that goes out with a boom. Relationships of all types will be tested in this story.

I hope the rumors are true that this one will be turned into a movie for the big screen. I’ll be first in line for it.

I highly recommend this one for all ages, even though it’s considered a young adult novel. Don’t let that hold you back from diving into this one. It has action, adventure, friendship, and so much more.

The Bonds of Love

Review by Fred Towers

J.M. Snyder
Amber Quill Press

Vic Braunson has a special kind of problem ~ his lover, Matt DiLorenzo, somehow imbues him with enhanced superpowers every time they have sex. It’s something Vic has learned to live with in the years they’ve been together, and something he won’t let stand in the way of their relationship. Matt hates the powers, however, particularly when they put Vic in danger, but what can they do?

When Vic stops an armed robbery at a local convenience store, his picture appears in the morning paper. Later that day, Matt receives a phone call at work from Jordan Dubrowski, a guy he knew in high school. Jordan was his first, in every way ~ it was through him that Matt discovered his ability to transfer superpowers to his lovers. Jordan had a taste of those powers, and after reading about Vic’s role in the hold up, he’s decided he wants those powers back. But Matt is in love … and Vic won’t let him go without a fight. Still, Jordan will stop at nothing to get what he thinks rightly belongs to him…

This novel is a gay erotica superhero story with plenty of action in the bedroom as well as in the streets. Vic saves the day, but when his picture ends up in the paper, the real intrigue begins. He has to save his relationship from being torn apart by Matt’s ex-lover.

For action adventure readers, there is plenty of intrigue and action to get their hearts pumping. They can live vicariously through the superhero adventure. This action adventure superhero novel takes the superhero novel to the next level. It doesn’t close the door on the relationship behind the hero.

The erotica reader will enjoy the sex scenes between Matt and Vic, but they will get more than their crotch throbbing. They’ll be on the edge of their seats wanting more. Snyder writes strong characters, plots and moves from the bedroom to the streets with ease. I believe all readers who enjoy erotica, action, and more will enjoy this gay novel. I highly recommend it, especially to the gay superhero geeks like me.

Dick Master: Leatherland Under Attack

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Review by Fred Towers

Roy Klang writer/artist
Bruno Gmunder

I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel with some great gay superhero action and some sexually explicit action. I wasn’t sure if it would be heavier on one over the other, but the story was balanced between the two. The supervillains, Sperminator and Cyber-Drag are aliens invading the gay city, Leatherland. Dick Master and his friends have to conquer them with wit, strength, and great technical gadgets. The illustrations are great with depth and strong lines, but I wish they were in color. The story is creative, and I hope Roy Klang writes more superhero graphic novels. As the title implies, the sexual matter in the story is BDSM centered around a gay leather bar. I recommend this for adult (over 18) readers of gay fiction and/or superhero graphic novels, who won’t be bothered by the sexual content. It is quite an adventure.

Burly #1
Jeremy Owen
$5

Billed as “Beefy pinups with a geeky twist” Jeremy Owen offers a book aimed at bears and the men who love them. There’s reason his name likely sounds unfamiliar to you as it did to me. Burly is his first project, but don’t let that put you off.  Everybody has to start somewhere.

Owen’s interest in comics began as it did with many kids, from watching Super Friends. Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern were favorites. Can I say something? It feels good to know someone else didn’t fall in love with and twirl like Wonder Woman in their childhood. His attention turned to Marvel’s X-Men and Spider-man and Image when it came to actual comics though, and during his college days indy comics gained in appeal. After Owen came out he was disappointed in comics’ lack of bear characters. That disappointment turned around at the discoveries of Ed Luce’s Wuvable Oaf (a book I’ve yammered about plenty) and Steve MacIsaac’s Shirtlifter (a book I should yammer about). After a friend made a girlie pinup book Owen decided it was time to do a bear geek beefcake version. I say good for him for taking the initiative instead of waiting for someone else to do it! I’ve lost count over the number of times I’ve read gay fans complain about gay characters (and the lack of same) at Marvel and DC or the very detailed qualities of their perfect superhero ideals. There’s still a long road ahead, guys, and every reason to encourage diversity (it isn’t any ugly word like Republicans want Americans to believe) from small press, indy, and webcomics people while waiting for your ideal superhero to appear.

On to the book! Owen uses a variety of pop culture references (Trekkies, luchadores, sci fi, metal rockers) rather than the standard fare like cowboys and cops. Well, there is a mechanic (which is fine by me) and as Owen points out, he’s a
steampunk mechanic (still fine by me). He’s the deservedly so centerfold! As a collection of pinups there is no written narrative, just some descriptive, suggestive text to nudge readers along into making their own stories using the visuals as springboards. On the art side, Owen’s thick-lined style is on the mark for drawing burly guys in suitably dynamic, restive, and playful compositions with a range of personalities. There is a little frisky, teasing nudity totally in character for the tone of the book.

If you’re a bear or bear lover then head over to the Burly site. Burly is a limited edition so don’t wait! And keep an eye on him for an interesting future project drawing elements from several genres.

The Positions of Love: Book 1

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Review by Fred Towers

J.M. Snyder
Amber Quill Press

When Matt diLorenzo gives his lover, Vic Braunson, a copy of the Kama Sutra for Gay Men as a Christmas gift, they find it doubles as a handy reference guide to Vic’s super powers. All they have to do is test out the positions to see which one gives him what ability …

Matt and Vic have been living together almost a year now, and this is their first Christmas. Not a big fan of the holiday, Vic is unsure what to buy his lover. Matt gives him two guidelines to go by ~ the gift must be under $50, and must be something sexual, because Vic has some time off during the holidays and Matt plans to spend that time together.

I may be a little biased because I’m a superhero freak, and I crave more gay superhero fiction. There just isn’t enough. This installment of Matt and Vic is more erotic than superhero. At this point, they are exploring what lovemaking positions gives him what powers, instead of how his powers can help other people. I can’t wait for future installments to see how that side of the story develops.

I did get Matt and Vic confused at times, but the writing was so crisp I didn’t worry about it. I just continued reading, figuring that it’d work itself out. The characters are distinctly different in the descriptions, so I don’t know why I’d get bumped in who was who. Despite this minor confusion, I fell in love with the characters.

The author does seem to love the word “bulbous” when describing the cock’s head. It was used at least twice to describe it in two different sex scenes. Since I wasn’t sure what the word meant, it jumped out at me.

One phrase that I fell in love with was “A cutting wind pulled at his robe like a hungry lover.” The language in this story is smooth and captivating.

I highly recommend this book to all erotica lovers, romance lovers, and superhero freaks. I can’t wait to see how his superpowers manifest themselves in future installments, such as what happens when the top and bottom flip in bed.

I absolutely loved this graphic novel. The illustrations really popped. The colors in the illustrations were magnigicient. The story was well thought out and had several twists. Even though this graphic novel wasn’t as sexual as Dick Master by Roy Klang, but I liked it that way. I think the lack of explicit sex in this graphic novel will make it more appealing to heterosexial superhero fans than Dick Master. I really liked the profiles of the characters at the end describing their abilities and their biography. I recommend this to readers who love gay romance fiction, gay superhero stories, and graphic novel readers of all sexual orientations and ages above 13. The superheroes and supervillians have great powers.

Unmasked: Erotic Tales of Superheroes

BOOK BLURB: Next time you are rescued from a burning building by a tall, hung, muscle-bound man in tights, will you offer your services in appreciation? Why not? Superheroes have needs just like everyone else. All you have to do is promise to protect his secret identity and try not to damage the spandex! Some things just won’t wash out. With any luck, you might become a sidekick. Every superhero has a super ability, and this latest Eric Summers collection of erotic short stories highlights those incredible talents that seem to come out when the sun goes down and the bedroom door closes. But, every superhero also has a weakness. Be careful because one such superhero in Unmasked: Erotic Tales of Gay Superheroes loses his powers if he has an orgasm. What is a boy to do?

“Unmasked: Erotic Tales of Gay Superheroes” tells the stories of those hot men who are powerful in a dangerous situation and equally powerful under the covers. Try not to fall in love because the life of a superhero can be a lonely one, and the life of a heart-sick admirer can be even lonelier. Just lie back and enjoy the moment as a man with a cape and a mask takes you to new levels of ecstasy.

This is a hot collection of erotica, and for the superhero freaks like me, it’s an amazing collection. The stories are great superhero fiction as well as hot erotica. I didn’t want to like this collection, since my story was accepted at first, but was cut at the last minute. But this collection is too great to pass up.

The reader will enjoy the superheroes and the super villains in this anthology. The short stories have fully developed characters and plots, which go beyond the erotic elements. The erotica is a bonus for battling the bad guys.

I recognized some of the authors, such as Jay Starre and my friend, Stephen Osborne. You can’t read an erotica anthology without coming across one of these guys. There are probably more authors that others would recognize. Whether they are known or not, all of these stories are topnotch.

I highly recommend this to superhero freaks and readers of smut. Don’t miss this one!

Kennedy

Friday, September 10th, 2010

Contributed by Mike McDermott

Kennedy was one of the first Potential Slayers that was gathered into Sunnydale by Giles when the servants of the First Evil started killing the Potentials before they could become Slayers.  Kennedy was one of the few Potentials who had already received extensive training from her Watcher before coming to Sunnydale, so she quickly rose into a position of authority, acting as a drill instructor for the newer trainees.

Coming from a wealthy family, Kennedy can be rather spoiled and is used to getting her own way.  Combined with her forceful personality, this has sometimes made her a bit obnoxious, and she was one of the most outspoken voices questioning Buffy’s decisions and challenging her authority during the war against the First Evil.

Kennedy was immediately attracted to Willow, but Willow was initially resistant to Kennedy’s advances since she was still grieving the recent death of her lover Tara.  However the two women did eventually become a couple, once Willow was able to set aside her guilt over moving on with her life.

Kennedy became a full-fledged Vampire Slayer when Willow cast a spell to “activate” all Slayers worldwide.  Since then

Kennedy has been in a leadership role in the “Slayer army”, supervising the training of the newer recruits.  Recently she was assigned to evaluate Satsu’s performance as a new squad leader.

Under unrevealed circumstances Kennedy was killed, butit was a “mystical death” and only lasted for a month.  Still feeling guilty over what happened to Tara, Willow tried to keep Kennedy away from Buffy for several months in order to protect her, but eventually Kennedy ended up reintegrated into the core of the Scooby Gang, and continues to be a valued member of Buffy’s team.

Kennedy first appeared in the Buffy TV series in the “Bring On The Night” episode from season 7. In comics her first appearance is Buffy Season 8 issue #10.

Rude Talk

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Dear Johnny,
Writing for advice is something I never thought I’d do. Looking back at all the crazy drama that’s happened in my life it was probably inevitable. Most kids have fun memories of summer camp, soccer, and girlfriends. You know life will be different when you realize your father is an arms dealer. Yeah. Things went downhill witnessing his murder and then being kidnapped and turned into a quake machine, and falling in with a bunch of spandexy people was like having a family again. A big family with a lot of weird stuff and adventures always happening. I met my best friend and fell a little in love with a girl and kissed her before she left and broke my heart. And then everyone I knew went their separate ways. You know, writer whims, editorial mandates, brooding angst and all that.

More crap happened and I lost the power that made me special. Thanks, witchiepoo! I fell in with some other misfits and eventually learned to accept being powerless. I even reconnected with the girl who broke my heart. She seemed to want to get close to me and I let her. We had sex and I thought things were good between us, but she ups and leaves me — tells me we’re done in a damn letter. So I said to hell with her.

One day my best friend reappears pretty much out of nowhere. It was during a mission — you know how crazy things can get! Seeing him was a freakin’ surprise, but not as much as what came next! He kissed me! This big, intense, “I’m so happy to see you because I thought you were gone forever and you won’t get away now” kind of kiss! Funny how news about that made it all over the world! Things’ve been going great between Star and me. He’s incredibly passionate and the sex is wild! He’s got one habit of being with other people…something about being overwhelmed with feelings. See, he grew up in a — place that was — the people there were really f’ed up. It’s like he’s an alcoholic at a free bar. He says he wants me to be his emotional anchor. It’s kind of — I don’t know…did I say how great our sex life is? Yeah.

A few nights ago Star was being a frisky tease and and just when he started to get serious the woman who left me twice opens our door and got a big shock when she saw us half naked and Star’s arm around me. She had her own surprise — she’s pregnant! She started yelling and accusing him of stuff right before going berserk and attacking him. She’s not your average woman, so believe me when I say she can get really feral! She pushed him out the second story window and kept attacking him. I finally got her to stop and listen to me. Then I asked her if I’m the baby’s father, and she told me she didn’t have sex with another guy before she left the last time. So it’s still a shock that I’m going to be a father. I mean, I’m young and — never thought I’d say this — in love with Star. I don’t have any friends outside of work and there aren’t a lot of bi guys in my field. At least not many who fess up to it. Sure, there’re tons of posts on Craigs List looking for sex on the DL, but there’s no one else I can turn to about this whole thing. Maybe I could be a good father but I don’t have a clue how fit being a father in with Star and keep the not really girl friend happy enough not to kill him. She could. Plus, there’s a girl — well, she was a girl when I first met her but now she’s a little older than me — it’s complicated. Anyway, Layla says she thinks something isn’t right. She won’t say what it is, just that she “knows stuff”. Annoying as that is — and it is — she does. Know stuff.

What do I do, Johnny?

Ruminating Internally Confused

Sounds like you just caught a break in life after a long run of crap, RIC. Good for you. Now stop whining before you fall back into the drama queen role just because of a couple new bumps in your life. True, the number of gay and bi guys in relationships in our circle is few, but probably more than you realize. I hear you about DL guys, RIC! Let me tell you it’s happening other times too. More than once during my years of adventuring a villain knocked me out only to try to take advantage to see if I lived up to my codename Lucky 8. That’s when I’d blast them strong and hard. Except for one time Fluffer and I were punching it out.

There was a time when the majority of gay guys were like your BF, RIC. A different guy every week, if not every night. Not that I’m against monogamy I’ve been happily monogamous with my BF, AKA the man I’d marry if it were legal. The thing is, every relationship takes honesty, respect, and communication. Your BF sounds like he’s “triple G” for you, to borrow a phrase from another advice columnist. What you need to do first is decide what’s acceptable for you and how willing you are to be “triple G” for him and then you need to talk it over with him without making him feel defensive. Grab life by its big balls, RIC!

And maybe the BF needs a new nickname. “Star”?

Now about being a father… You wouldn’t be ready to be a father even if it the pregnancy was planned. No one’s ever ready to be a father the first time. Talk to some other dads for advice. Yeah, yeah, not so many dads in our profession, right? Make the effort. You can’t ditch the kid if your the dad and a baby is going to impact all that sweaty sex you have. There’ll be times when you’ve cleaned up so much snot and vomit that you don’t want to see another bodily fluid and that’s the only thing on the BF’s mind. You’ll work it out and if he’s all you say he is, he’ll help out. Of course, you’ll have to share parental duties with the dear mom who sounds like she wants things on her terms all the time. Be honest and stand your ground.

Speaking of honesty, you should insist on a paternity test. I think this woman who “knows stuff” suspects your “not really girlfriend” may not be telling the truth and someone else may be the baby’s father. True, this “knowing stuff” attitude has to be irritating and condescending at times, but it doesn’t mean she isn’t right, only that she likes to act this way. You’ve been dumped twice without warning so you’ve a right to be certain. For all you know she conceived immaculately. Improbable yes, but there are instances of it happening to women in our line of work. You’ll want a lawyer if things get out of hand. I hear that Murdoch guy and his associates are all wrapped up in something that sounds bad, so think about consulting one out of town. I hear Kate Spencer is looking for new work and she was one hell of a DA. Now get busy!

Till next time!

Johnny Rude
