New York’s Gay Night Life

Friday, December 30th, 2011

One of the many books that I’ve borrowed from my local libraries is The Simon & Kirby Superheroes hardcover. Published in late 2010 by Titan, it’s a hefty, oversized, and handsomely printed behemoth, weighing at least 5 pounds, that collects over 450 pages of Simon & Kirby’s superhero lesser known comics from smaller publishers. Check the book out if you’re a Simon and Kirby fan or have a liking for D list characters. Their earliest work here is a trio of tales recounting the incredibly short lived adventures of the Black Owl. Black Owl who was secretly society playboy Doug Danville was a riff on Batman, only with a blue and red costume topped off with a yellow crested hood and a less than impressive villain menacingly named “the Whistler”. Right, not so menacing – the villain and the costume! Then there’s love interest Terry Dane, seen below. Doug thinks she’s playing hard to get by being a private detective. Alas, this was just an example of the female character being intrigued by the seductiveness of a the heroic, idealized man.

Here in “The Return of the Whistler” from Prize Comics #8 (1941) Terry has been hired by the owner of the luxury yacht SS Camelot and has just confronted Doug, disguised as a Swedish sailor, who’s out to protect her because he’s certain she’s really just a damsel in distress and may fall prey to the Whistler again, who does show up again. Hey, what more do you need to know? It’s a supercompressed story even at 9 pages!

Art by Jack Kirby

Now why write about this one panel from from a Golden Age comic about an obscure character? It’s the word “gay”. Simon almost certainly used it to mean happy and festive, not, you know, gay “gay”. All the same, I’d like to think that given all the queer goings on in Harlem that weren’t a big secret at the time that Joe Simon meant gay like Judy Garland fans.

Late Thoughts On Teen Titan Bunker

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Bunker recently debuted in Teen Titans #3. You heard about him already — the  gay teen who’ll join the ranks of this incarnation of DC’s post relaunch super powered teens. If you want to be technical there was a two panel, non-speaking cameo and cover appearance in issue #1. That is if you want to be technical or a completist, but you shouldn’t be. I had hoped there might be a little teaser about Miguel Jose Barragan, our new little, flamboyant mijo who comes from a supportive family and an equally supportive town. There wasn’t. But wait, you say! Doesn’t that fly in the face of Latin machismo? That’s what I thought until remembering that I read an article in the Advocate about a place in Mexico where men expressing non-heterosexual gender roles are accepted and even celebrated. The article is lost to me now, but it may have focused on the muxe of Zapoteca culture in Oaxaca state. The Wikipedia article defines a muxe as “a physically male individual who dresses and behaves in a feminine manner; they may be seen as a third gender”. A vestida is a muxe who wears female clothing and a pintada is one who wears male clothing and make up, but I’m starting to digress. Muxe are interesting in their own right though muxe is not an across the board equivalent of gay though as we think of it. I mention them simply to note that there is at least one contemporary exception (it wasn’t unheard of for pre-Conquest Native cultures to have third and fourth genders) to what can often be the typical reaction Mexican gays likely experience. Not to be forgotten is a movement toward government recognition of same sex unions. So it isn’t completely improbable for a fictional gay teen to come from a supportive though equally fictional Mexican village. I doubt muxe were a source of inspiration for Lobdell when creating Bunker and it’s just as well because the complexity of their cultural role in Zapoteca society would be, to put it nicely, badly mistranslated in mainstream, superhero comics.

The creative decision to make Miguel happy, proud, and grounded by love and acceptance is a welcome one. LGBT teens especially need positive images, but Miguel is not Kevin Keller which is good, because despite his squeaky clean life Keller’s character shouldn’t be seen as the epitome of gay teens. So far Lobdell and artist Brett Booth have shown us a happy, eager Miguel, if not a little naive or downright unaware of Red Robin coming under the influence of the villain du jour. Being 53 I readily admit that I’ve little idea what makes for a flamboyant gay teen either from the US or Mexico or anywhere for that matter. That said, I think it may involve more than Miguel’s choice in clothes so far. A blue shirt, thin tie, purple sweatervest, John Lennon style sunglasses, in my humble opinion, a pair of shoes that seem to me more ugly than flamboyant,  and gray – are they grey or purple? – pants? But then we get a wide stance butt shot of Miguel in those tight pants so I feel a bit like a dirty old man thinking it’s about time we get more gratuitous crotch and butt shots. Of course, language is another way to convey flamboyance. The way Miguel talks seems pretty average to me. The flashiest comment he makes is: “Look at me! You think something this exquisite – this perfect – happened by chance? A Miguel Jose Barragan is anything but an accident.” But then I shouldn’t overlook his costume, a purple and red number with shoulder pads, and a mask that covers half his face. Brett Booth needs to redesign girlfriend’s costume because ugly is the word that comes to mind. And if it isn’t changed soon, then I suggest removing the mask or replacing it with one that’s domino style. Having an out and proud teen superhero sporting a half face mask seems questionable to me. Just a thought.

Those are all my thoughts for now though. As far as first appearances go, Miguel is a bit jejune after all the build up. Jejune sounds so much nicer than saying flat or bland. Thankfully a long overdue gay teen is part of this team concept though I hope and expect Lobdell and Booth to build on what little they’ve given in this initial appearance.

And please, Mr Lobdell, don’t have the other members start calling him “Miggs” like you have in some interviews. It just sounds wrong!

The first of three video pieces about the muxe, Mexico’s third gender, can be watched on CNN here.

Transgender Day Of Remembrance

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

November 20th is the day marked to commemorate the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Thirteen years ago on November 28th Rita Hester, like Matthew Shepard five weeks before, was brutally murdered, more than 20 stab wounds to her chest, in her home. She was only 34 years old. Her name may be unfamiliar to you, unlike Shepard, whose murder was well reported in the media and would become a focal point of hate crimes legislation formally known as the Matthew Shepard Act. Ms. Hester was African American and lived in the Allston/Brighton neighborhood of Boston. Ten years prior to her murder Rita began to live her daily life fully as the woman she knew she was meant to be. Standing over six feet and weighing approximately 225 pounds, Rita was known as someone who could take care of herself. By all accounts she was spirited, out going, much loved, and accepted. Except by the person or persons who took exception to her and savagely ended her life.

Rita Hester isn’t the first transgendered person to have been murdered, nor has she been the last. No one should have their life ended because they choose to live their life as they know themselves to be. No one should be forgotten because a majority of society and news media implicitly consider a person less news-worthy, less a human because they belong to multiple minorities. Nor do I think gays and lesbians can leave them behind in the stuggle for civil rights because the straight, cisgendered majority, and far too many cisgendered gays, lesbians and bisexuals misunderstand, fear, or hate them.

Acceptance and respect should be universal.

Gay Previews 1/2012

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

January sees the debut of Archie’s ongoing Kevin Keller series! I’ve gone on record before about never having read an Archie comic in my 40 plus years of comics collecting. Yes, even as a nine year old I was a comics snob who looked down and the Riverdale gang, and before Keller’s debut, I’d have bet that I never would have either. My thanks to Dan Parent and the Archie publishers for for making that no longer the case and now for continuing the character in a solo title. And it’s incredibly easy to relate with Kevin being bad at dating! (Also sad, but that’s my problem.) Somewhere Frederick Wertham’s ghost is wailing!

Last month I whined about the apparent lack of LGBT characters or themes in Vertigo comics and then the charming François Peneaud of the Gay Comics List pointed me to an interview (that I can’t find now but I found another one linked below) in which Chris Roberson talked about a character coming out in iZombie. I borrowed a copy of the first trade, “Dead to the World”, from my library and found it to be an engaging book in a quirky good sense. Thanks,  François! Unfortunately my library doesn’t have later iZombie trades.”Horrors!”, I say.

Eaglemoss offer up statues of Northstar and sister Aurora this month just in time for the last issue of Alpha Flight that was first a mini, then upped to ongoing and then canceled. The final issue of the Young Avengers mini is solicited, so look for it soon…ish. Or maybe not.

DC reprints 18 issues of Young Love in one volume of Showcase Presents for $20! SAnd look for more of Stephen Sadowski’s hot men with DE’s Warlord of Mars annual!

Only 11 months till the end of the current b’ak’tun! You know, December 21st, the end of the Mayan calendar, AKA Doomsday! Enjoy your comics while you can!

Thanks to Andy Mangels who compiled 1,001 lists back in  the day for the Gayleague email list.

Names listed in bold are either family or LGBT friendly.

Random Seduction of the Innocent Quote For 11/8/11

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

“It is not scientifically sound to narrow down the problem to whether the influence of comics is just ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ That cannot be a sound starting point. The question is, do they have a discernible influence, and if they have how does it work, how intense and lasting is it, and in what fields and regions of the child’s mind does it manifest itself. This is exactly how I started.”

Random SOTI Quote For 10/25

“Flooding the market with love-cofession comics was so successful in diverting attention from crime comic books that it had been entirely overlooked that many of them really are crime comic books, with a seasoning of love added. Unless the love comics are sprinkled with some crime they do not sell. Apparently love does not pay.”

The Comics Conspiracy & “GD” Superman

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Rich Johnston over at Bleeding Cool writes about the owner of the Comics Conspiracy shop in Asheboro, NC being upset with Grant Morrison over a single panel in which Superman says “GD”. The Comics Conspiracy owner interpreted “GD” to mean “God damn” and decided his Christian sensibilities were offended. My first thought was that “GD” was a nod to the Hebraic practice of writing “God” and “G-d”. But he was offended only because the interpretation he gave to “GD” came from Superman. Johnston posts the following quote taken from the Comics Conspiracy Facebook page in which the owner states: “I could see Guy Gardner and maybe even Hal Jordan (Green Lanterns) saying it. I could see Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) saying it. I could easily see Damian Wayne (Robin) or MAYBE even Bruce Wayne saying it. But Superman was created to be the “perfect” super-hero. Unblemished. Superman is an American icon.”

So, the shop owner, whose name I can’t find on either the Facebook page or the shop’s website, wouldn’t be upset if a writer had any of these other characters say “God damn”. Just Superman. He’s decided to cancel all future store and customer pull orders for any book written by Grant Morrison. This is where he takes a stand. Never mind that he’ll continue to sell a book like The Boys which consistently pushes the envelope and contains far more language and imagery that could be deemed offensive according to individual reader’s tastes. Never mind that on the Comics Conspiracy website there are rotating images of female superheroes showing lots of tits and ass for the subscription service.

Of course it’s the owner’s right to decide to boycott books written by Morrison, and I don’t wish him to go out of business, but in my opinion the man is being hypocritical.  My father decided that comics were a “thing of the Devil” and forbade me to read them when I was 14. That lasted all of two weeks after I took a black marker to his precious TV Guide and blacked out every listing that wasn’t either news or a religious program. I didn’t stand for an adult telling me what I could read as a teen and this shop would certainly lose my business over this if I lived in Asheboro.

Kevin Keller The Jock

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Last week part two of the Kevin Keller mini series was released, making it the fourth Archie comic I’ve ever bought and read in my life. Dan Parent succeeded in keeping the tone of the issue consistently good with the debut chapter and in fleshing out Kevin’s character in particular as well as the Keller family. Rather than comment on the entire issue I’d like to focus on one scene. Kevin has already come out of the closet at home and school and in this sequence a trio from the track team are verbally harrassing Kevin for trying out. Having a positive self-image, Kevin confronts the boys and challenges them to a race. Not long after the three boys collapse on the ground trying to catch their breath. Kevin gives them a dose of their own medicine when he says “If I’m such a girly man and you can’t keep up with me — wat does that make you?”

This flashback resonated for me because PE class in junior high and high school was torture for me. Back then I was gangly, socially inept (a nerd’s nerd), dressed in K-Mart blue light specials (at least they weren’t hand me downs since I was the oldest), and ridiculed for being gay years before I came out. I might as well have had a bull’s eye painted on me when it came to gym class and team sports. The only exception was track though unlike our fictional Kevin though, I refused to participate on the track team. Coach Seaman (I am not making the name up) and later Coach K (whose his Polish name was usually mangled) had little empathy for kids who weren’t players on a team, especially football. The worst though were those days when the coach shouted the words “dodge ball” at the beginning of the period! Those two words struck horror in me as I and every other unpopular kid knew we’d just become targets for all the jocks eager to hurl fast balls at us with ugly delight while the coach took it easy and turned his eye. Good times! Right. The stress gym class caused reached such a point that I somehow convinced the family doctor to get me out of it for the rest of high school.

Several years after high school was a different story. Internally I’d come to terms with being gay though it still wasn’t smart to come out in my rural hometown back in the late 70s. I’d developed a crush on a slightly older guy that I worked with and one day he brought up the idea of taking karate classes together and was I interested? I jumped at the idea, hoping it’d lead to something more with him. It did, but it was only friendship and the occasional practicing nunchaku kata, punches or kicks. The lessons stopped for him when he got serious with a woman while the adrenaline thrill (it was to me) of breaking boards with bare feet, double jump front kicks and sparring with farm boys kept me going back for another couple years.

And then one night I was shocked when two guys from my high school class walk in, jock footballer Bob Cody and John, whose last name I’Ve forgotten and will always remember for this story and being the one bully I actually fought in 6th grade till a teacher pulled us apart. There they were, wanting to take lessons! The next few days I debated about staying or leaving the class but decided to stay partly because I had a green belt (which isn’t all that much but I was proud) and I wasn’t going to be run off. Dojo philosphy was to be helpful so I was glad that I wasn’t asked to help them as they struggled to make their stiff legs do kicks or perfect their form in general, and I secretly celebrated when they gave up a couple months later.

More props to Dan Parent and a lot of encouragement from me to you if you’re dreaming of doing something outside your comfort zone! Find a way to do it and do it! And if you’ve ever had a similar experience I’d love to hear about it!
